교육목표

 비판적 글로벌 스터디즈 협동과정은 급변하는 지구화 시대의 요구에 부응하여 인문학을 교육하고 연구하는 석박사 프로그램이다. 국경을 넘나드는 자본과 기술, 이민과 이주노동자, 국제 영토분쟁과 제노사이드, 환경과 재난, 사회적 소수자의 권리와 젠더 등 지구화 시대의 도전과 과제에 능동적이고 창조적으로 대응하기 위해서는 경계를 가로지르고 뛰어넘는 비판적 지식과 대담한 실천이 요구된다. 이 협동과정은 지구화 시대의 도전과 과제에 대한 인문사회과학 교육 분야의 응답이다. 

 ‘아래로부터의 지구화’라는 관점에서 보면, 비판적 글로벌 스터디즈는 지구적 불평등에 대응하는 정치적, 학문적, 윤리적 선택이다. 그것은 ‘다중심에서 탈중심으로’, ‘전파에서 상호작용으로’, ‘아래로부터의 지구화’라는 세 축으로 구성되며, 민족·젠더·인종·문화·문명·종교 등 인간에 대한 인위적 경계 짓기를 넘어서 궁극적으로는 ‘인류’를 향해 열려 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 비판적 글로벌 스터디즈 패러다임은 인간 삶의 차이와 경험의 다양성을 ‘보편’의 이름으로 지워버리는 제국의 인문학과 ‘특수’의 이름으로 본질화하는 민족의 인문학을 다 같이 거부한다. 나아가 국민국가의 틀에서 해방된 트랜스내셔널한 상상력을 바탕으로 국민국가의 틀에 갇혀 있는 인문사회과학의 방향 전환을 모색하고 미래를 향해 열려 있는 담론장의 생성에 기여한다. 

 협동과정은 인문사회과학의 위기를 적극적으로 타개하는 방안으로, 자유롭고 진취적인 인문사회과학의 소양을 갖춘 학문 후속 세대를 양성하는 교육의 장을 열고자 한다. 그리고 학제간 경계를 허무는 탈학제적 글로벌스터디즈 커리큘럼을 바탕으로 다양한 교육과정과 연구 지원을 통해 지구화 시대에 요청되는 비판적 시각과 실무 역량을 겸비한 참신한 인재를 길러내는 것을 목표로 한다. 

세부전공

본 과정의 학생은 다음의 세부 전공을 선택할 수 있다. 

가) 글로벌 문학(Global Literature) 

나) 글로벌 문화와 사회(Global Culture & Society)

다) 글로벌 역사(Global History)

석사학위과정

□ 커리큘럼

1. 석사학위를 취득하고자 하는 학생은 본 과정이 인정하는 교과목 중 24학점 이상을 이수해야 한다. 수강과목 이수는 지도 교수와의 논의 하에 이루어져야 한다. 

2. 지도 교수의 지도하에 본교 혹은 다른 학교 다른 학과의 과목을 전공학점으로 취득할 수 있다.

3. CGS 6001(What is Critical Global Studies?)을 필수과목으로 이수해야 한다. 

□ 자격시험

1. 석사학위 과정의 종합시험은 다음 조건에 따라 시행된다. 

- 응시 자격: 18학점 이상 취득하고 3학기 이상 등록한 학생

- 종합시험은 학과에서 지정하는 2과목에 합격해야 한다. 

□ 논문

1. 석사학위를 취득하기 위해서는 대학원 시행세칙 제6장(학위논문)에 규정한 절차에 따라 소정의 논문을 제출하여야 한다. 

2. 석사학위 청구논문은 논문심사위원회의 심사에 통과해야 한다.

1. 본 과정의 모든 학생은 2대륙의 3개 언어 구사 능력을 갖추도록 권장한다.

박사학위과정

1. 박사학위를 취득하고자 하는 학생은 본 과정이 인정하는 교과목 중에서 36학점 이상을 이수해야 한다(이 중 개별지도 학점 12학점을 포함할 수 있다). 수강과목 이수는 지도 교수와의 논의 하에 이루어져야 한다.

<1. 공통 과목>

CGS 6001 What is Critical Global Studies?   (3 credits)

The course is required for all MA students in the Graduate Program in Critical Global Studies. In addition, all Critical Global Studies (AG) Ph.D. students who have not yet taken it must complete this course. Critical Global Studies is not simply a world-wide version of Area Studies. Rather, it sees the globalization and its effect from below. This course provides a broad and transdisciplinary view of foundational ideas, issues, problems, and methodologies in critical global studies. Eight faculty members teach the omnibus course every two semesters in accordance with concerted contents. 

CGS 6002 Literary and Critical Theories   (3 credits)

This course introduces contemporary literary and critical theories that will help students develop critical minds and deal with the impending social, cultural, political, and/or environmental issues. Students will examine major contemporary theories such as ecocriticism, animal studies, and new materialism.

CGS 6003 Global Minor Literature  (3 credits)

Loosely adopting the Deleuzian concept of “minor literature,” this seminar examines literary genres, authors and regions which are commonly excluded from the “world literature” canons. The readings include a broad range of literary works from different regions, social classes, genders and languages. This seminar attempts to envision global literature from an alternative perspective by focusing on non-Western, migration, queer, non-anthropocentric literature as well as unconventional genres such as oral literature.

CGS 6004 Transnationalism and Literature   (3 credits)

This course aims to contest the ways in which literary history is organized in terms of nations, areas, and regions, and to reconfigure literary history in a global context. Students will investigate the relationship and interaction between transnationalism and cosmopolitanism in literary history. 

CGS 6005 Critical Development Studies   (3 credits)

This course challenges the conventional view that the content and logic of 'development', primarily defined in terms of technological progress, industrialization, and economic growth, are universal. The course will first review mainstream as well as alternative critical perspectives on development. It will then discuss a range of selected topics, providing students with a deeper understanding of development as a historically, socially, and politically constructed assemblage of discourse, knowledge, and practice.  

CGS 6006 Globalization and Cultural Politics  (3 credits)

In this course, students read theories of global culture and critically analyse cultural aspects of globalization such as media, migration and global cities.

CGS 6007 Globalization & Social Movements  (3 credits)

This course examines the causes, processes, and consequences of globalization and how they affect and are affected by social movements. The course provides students with an opportunity to think critically about globalization and the problems it generates, as well as to explore the often-neglected role of social movements in shaping global politics and economy. Cases will include global justice movement, climate justice movement, alter-globalization movement, and other forms of transnational activism.

CGS 6008 Global History: Theories and Approaches  (3 credits)

This course introduces contemporary historiographies and critical theories that help students develop critical minds and deal with transnational/global history, which has contributed to linking different parts of the world. Students will examine major contemporary approaches to the history of migration and trade, empires and nation-states, religion and the environment, borderlands, ideas, and communication and war. 

CGS 6009 Modern Environmental History in a Global Perspective  (3 credits)

This course explores historically the ways in which modern society, culture, politics, and economy have shaped and been shaped by the understanding, transformation, and administration of the environment. The course first introduces students to the major historiographical debates over the past decades in the field of environmental history. Selected historical cases of environmental issues are then examined, with particular emphasis on the global connectedness embedded in modern society-environment relations.

CGS 6010 Borders and Frontiers in Global and Transnational History  (3 credits)

In this course, students examine the formation or construction of borderlands and frontiers in each region in history from the perspective of transnational/global history.

CGS 6123 Critical Methodolgies  (3 Credits)

This course introduces students to historical approaches to critical theory (Marxist, psychoanalytic, poststructuralist, postcolonial, feminist, gender) and explores recent developments in biopolitics, posthumanism, new materialism, ecocriticism, animal studies, queer theory, and critical race theory.  

CGS 6124 Victorian Literature and Cosmopolitanism  (3 Credits)

This course examines the history and theory of cosmopolitanism and explores literary representations of world citizenship in Victorian fiction, poetry, political philosophy, and travel narratives. The course addresses recent debates within cosmopolitan studies between humanist and posthumanist responses to globalization, transnationalism, and internationalism and historicizes these debates within Victorian literature.

CGS 6125 Victorian Novel and Imperialism  (3 Credits)

This course examines the relationship between popular forms of fiction (bildungsroman, domestic novel, realist novel, gothic novel, sensation novel, adventure novel) and the history, theory, and institutions of the British Empire during the Victorian period. The course addresses recent postcolonial and posthumanist approaches to the biopolitics and ecologies of empire.  

CGS 6126 African American Literature  (3 Credits)

In this course, students study the development of African American literature through the analysis of representative texts and discussion of their social and political contexts.

CGS 6127 Emergent U.S. Literature  (3 Credits)

In this course, students study American minority literature (other than African American literature) within various historical and cultural contexts.

CGS 6143 노신 연구(Studies in Lu Xun)  (3학점)

노신의 작품들에 대하여 분석하고 또한 중국과 서양에서 노신을 접근하는 제 논지들의 특징에 대하여 논의한다. 

CGS6144 중국 문학 입문(Introduction to Chinese Literature and Culture, 中國文化研究緒說)  (3학점)

중국 근현대문화의 관습과 문화현상에 대하여 토론하는 수업으로 대표 논문과 문학, 문화텍스트를 읽고 분석하여 학생들이 중국사회표상 속의 문화 구성 요인과 사회 통념 등을 파악할 수 있도록 한다. 

CGS 6145 디아스포라와 중국 문학(Diaspora and Chinese Literature, 漢語離散文學研究)  (3학점)

중국어권 문학 연구(Sinophone Literature)라는 주제로 근현대 중국 디아스포라 문학작품, 중국어권 문학작품을 읽고 토론하는데, 특히 디아스포라의 자아에 대한 의식과 표현, 반성적, 분석적 자아 인식 등에 초점을 맞춘다.

CGS 6151 Advanced Topics in Korean Poetics  (3 Credits)

Students in this course will investigate topics in twentieth and twenty-first century Korean poetry and poetics. Topics will change each time the course is offered to reflect the interests of students and the instructor but might include: the language of wonder in the twenty-first-century Korean lyric; the lyric sublime in twentieth-century Korean verse; edges and lyric descriptions of division in mid-twentieth-century Korean poetry; lyric bodies that have mattered in Korea; figure, figuring, and poetic persuasion in twentieth-century Korea; genre formations and poetic practice in twentieth-century Korea; the “avant” and other poetic “gardes” in twentieth-century Korea; guns and Korea’s twentieth-century poetic “canon.” Readings will be in Korean and English.

CGS 6152 Seminar in Advanced Literary Translation  (3 Credits)

Students in this course will investigate the theory and practice of literary translation by reading a wide variety of literary works in Korean and English, as well as literary translations and essential essays about translation. In addition, students will create their own translations of significant Korean literary works. Having gained an understanding of the subtleties of literary translation in theory and practice, students who complete this course will be able to competently translate not only literature but texts from a variety of genres.

CGS 6201 Intellectual History of the U.S.  (3 Credits)

This course provides a historical context for studying American culture by discussing how ideas in historical documents, philosophical essays, and political speeches are reflected in American literature and popular culture.

CGS 6202 Cultural Studies  (3 Credits)

This course provides a survey of major critical and theoretical texts in cultural studies that students can use when they analyze examples of American culture.

CGS 6203 U.S. Film Studies  (3 Credits)

In this course, students study the history of American films and various critical approaches in film studies.

CGS 6204 U.S. Popular Culture  (3 Credits)

In this course, students analyze examples of American popular culture (film, television, popular music, advertising, etc.) within their historical and political contexts.

CGS 6205 Race and Ethnicity in the U.S.  (3 Credits)

In this course, students study how race and ethnicity have evolved as concepts in the U.S. and have shaped American society, institutions, and cultural values.

CGS 6206 Gender and Sexuality in the U.S.  (3 Credits)

In this course, students study how gender and sexuality have evolved as concepts in the U.S. and have shaped American society, institutions, and cultural values.

CGS 6207 Class in the U.S.  (3 Credits)

In this course, students study various ways in which class has been defined and represented in the U.S. and the intersections between class and other concepts like race and gender.

CGS 6208 U.S. Regional Studies  (3 Credits)

In this course, students study the historical and cultural uniqueness of various U.S. regions through the analysis of cultural products of those regions.

CGS 6209 Migration and Transnationalism in the U.S. Context  (3 Credits)

In this course, students study critical approaches to migration and transnationalism and how those issues are connected to each other in American history, culture, and politics.

This course investigates some important topic in American culture and cultural studies.

This course investigates some important topic in American culture and cultural studies.

CGS 6221 Methodologies in Cultural Studies  (3 Credits)

This seminar aims to help students to design and carry out graduate-level research in socio-cultural studies. Students will read and discuss representative theories of cultural studies such as Biopolitics, Postmodernism, Posthumanism, New Materialism and new media studies. 

CGS 6222 Globalization and China  (3 Credits)

This course explores the relationship between globalization and China from various angles of politics, economy, environment and culture while examining globalization theories. 

CGS 6223 Chinese Urban Culture  (3 Credits)

This course examines Chinese urban culture from a global perspective. It examines key issues of urban consumer culture including fashion and urban space focusing on socio-economic and cultural characteristics of the Chinese middle class.  

CGS 6224 Chinese Media Culture  (3 Credits)

This course deals with Chinese media culture encompassing both old and new media. Students will examine the media industry and the changes in media policies, law and education in contemporary China. 

CGS 6225 Methodologies in Chinese Studies  (3 Credits)

In this course, students will compare different genealogies and methodologies of Chinese studies across Europe, North America and Asia and also discuss its differences from overlapping academic disciplines such as cultural studies, history, literature and development studies.  

CGS 6226 East Asian New Cinemas  (3 Credits)

This course explores new cinemas from Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea and mainland China. As well as various genres of recent films, it focuses on Japanese films from the ’60s and ’70s, Hong Kong and Taiwanese films from the ’80s, mainland Chinese films from the ’90s and Korean films from the 2000s and discusses their characteristics. 

CGS 6227 East Asian Modernism  (3 Credits)

In this seminar, students will read and discuss East Asian modernist literature from the first half of the 20^th century. The readings include works by Shen Congwen, Zhang Ailing, Yokomitsu Riichi, Kawabata Yasunari, Park Taewon and Yi Sang. 

CGS 6231 지구적 관점에서 본 한국 유교사(Korean Confucianism from Global Perspective)  (3 Credits)

유학적 인간학이 무엇인가를 세 가지 흐름을 통해 분석하고, 조선 전기 – 중기 – 후기에 걸쳐 어떻게 유교가 한국에서 발전되고 변형되었는지 주요 유학자들의 생애와 중심사상을 통해 알아본다. 

CGS 6232 지구 세계와 유교의 조우(Confucian Encounter with the Global World)  (3 Credits)

동아시아 유학 사상이 다른 세계관을 만났을 때, 특히 그리스도교를 중심으로 하는 서양 이론과 조우했을 때 어떻게 상호 이해를 도모했는지를 비판적으로 조망한다. 

CGS 6241 지구화 시대의 민족주의(Nationalism in Global Era) (3학점)

근대 민족주의의 등장과 발전 및 지구화 시대의 변화를 분석한다. 

CGS 6242 현대 한국정치사와 국제관계(Modern Political History of Korea and International Relation) (3학점)

해방 이후 현대 한국정치사의 흐름을 국제관계의 맥락을 고려하여 분석한다. 

CGS 6251 Digital Arts and Scholarly Craft in Korean Studies  (3 Credits)

Students in this course will explore how digital technologies are transforming the study of Korea while learning the fundamentals of programing and scripting languages, as well as various data analysis and visualization tools. Students will take away an understanding of evolving research methods made possible by new technologies and how these new methods and tools can be used to illuminate Korea and its cultural legacy.

CGS 6252 Computational Bibliography and the Sociology of "Korean" Data   (3 Credits)

In his Bibliography and the Sociology of Texts, D.F. McKenzie famously suggests that books are expressive forms: “sociology simply reminds us of the full range of social realities which the medium of print had to serve, ... [and] the human motives and interactions which texts involve at every stage of their production, transmission, and consumption. It alerts us to the roles of institutions.” While making his case for viewing bibliography as the sociology of texts, McKenzie suggests that the descriptive methods of bibliography and its comprehensive inclusiveness make it a particularly potent means of understanding people and how they use texts. This course suggests that data, like texts, are expressive forms. It investigates data by means of new computational bibliographic techniques to attempt to understand how people use data. It asks number of questions. How might we document a sociology of data? 이차세계대전 이후 구 식민지들이 독립하고 식민주의 체제가 동요하면서 밀접하게 얽혀서 전개되어 온 1945년 이후 지구촌의 역사를 개괄한다.

In this course, students will investigate the textual record of early twentieth-century Korea while learning the basics of bibliography. Students will gain the ability to read the myriad stories that Korea’s books as material artifacts tell about cultural life during Korea’s turbulent twentieth century.
